City Lights is one of the films that got me loving the classic cinema, silent and talkies.
One of the reasons he's great is precisely his music combining perfectly with his gags and his emotional touches.
Chaplin reigns supreme!

Chaplin's works portrayed society at that time, so he very well may have been an inspiration to the Marx Brothers.
Check out "we the people - Charlie Chaplin speech".
Although it is used for the people and things he speaks against (materialism, consumerism, etc), the speech is relevant to today's society more than ever.
He was actually blacklisted by the government for having such "radical" (normal, logical) views that reached so many. |
