By the way, it is very important that their feet are cleaned. If you do not do this they can easily get infection from fecal bacteria. There may not even be anything visible on the feet, but you can't see bacteria. That does not mean it isn't there.

Swimming is also a recommended exercise for overweight hedgehogs.
Any non-aquatic animal that stays in the water too long could drown, especially if it can't reach the bottom or is left unattended. What that has to do with Shming? Nothing at all. He can reach the bottom and is NEVER left unattendeed. He has a paving stone that he can and does climb onto if he does not want to swim.

Uh, seriously, you sound like you've never even seen hedgehogs except in pictures.
Very few hedgehogs flip on their backs. It's *very* unusual. Now, I can't imagine what porcupines have to do with anything since they are in no way related to hedgehogs.
One of the recommended treatments for dry skin is a bath with a few drops of olive oil. This also helps when young hedgehogs are quilling (that means losing baby quills and growing adult ones).

i've done this with my hedgehog to clean his feet and i feel SO bad for doing it now. :(

Are you, by chance, related to Yamazaki from Card Captor Sakura? Seriously, though domesticated hedgies rarely come into contact with water, many of those who have the opportunity enjoy swimming. I don't know much about European hedgehog species, but for African hedgies, floating on their back is a learned behavior that isn't easy to acquire and takes a lot of voluntary practice. It's something they only learn do if they enjoy it.

The reality is; Hedgehogs aren't that crazy about water. They swim if they have to, But as soon has they fear they are going to drown, They flip on their back to use their quills as a flotation device. (Porcupines can do the same) Also, water is very bad for their skin, It makes their skin dry. If they stay in the water for a long period of time, they will drown. Take it easy with the fellow, I want him to stay around a long time.
