i dont think the horse died, they probably had a platform lowering the horse down to a certain level, hense why it looks like the horse is sinking

La escena más triste que he visto en mi vida... y lo peor es que el caballo murió haciendo esa escena en la vida real, se les fue la mano a los de la peli y... el resto está ahí.

That's just a rumor, the horse didn't drown but Noah Hathaway did get hurt during the filming of this scene.

As a kid and even now, this scene still makes me sad. I hated seeing Artax suffer like that and it made me kinda angry that he wouldn't move when Atreyu was crying his heart out for him to keep going. Even when I close my eyes, I can still hear Atreyu screaming that horse's name...very sad and hurtful scene.
