I agree to a point, but many sites devoted to jazz describe her as just that.. the lady who invented cool jazz.

Are you kidding me? I think you have your genres mixed up. She was mainly a bebop performer. Cool jazz consists of much less improvisation.

I've loved Anita O'Day for many years. When Verve records formed and wanted to cut it's first album, they chose Anita over Ella and Sarah.
I think she's the greatest jazz singer that ever lived. She performed until she was 85 and could still do Honeysuckle Rose.
I wish they had a vid of her singing Peel Me a Grape.
