Interesting viewpoint from primrosetertis--from his opinions and name, clearly an English violist! I think he's right about Colin Davis--but Davis's musicality is already evident and so too, perhaps, his pomposity and insufferable ego!
Barbiroilli (a cellist and expatriate Italian) was clearly in another league. His accompaniment of Menuhin is lighter, crisper and chamber-music like. He was an incredible musician--a sweet, warm man of and for the orchestra. Musicians adored him.

thats stupid. 1st of all davis is a perfectly clear and easy to follow to follow conductor. 2ndly how is he failed? principle conductor of the LSO for over 12 years and now the 1st president of it since leonard bernstein. you're wrong.

To my ears Menuhin's earlier Live 1944 recording of the Beethoven Vln Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra puts ALL OTHERS (inc. this one!) to shame.
As for Colin Davis....the most poncey, pompous, overated, failed Clarinetist/Conductor Britain has produced?
Barberolli would have laughed at these comical, unhelpful O.T.T posturings!

Sorry guys, but I really do not like this Beethoven. This is not the Menuhin I remember. :-(

Yes, emotional depth, and then some times moderation, "cleanliness" - meaning that we hardly slide from one note to the other (since violin has continuous pitch). Concepts that cannot be MEASURED in engineering terms are more controversial, but can be nevertheless very important in Romantic Era music. So, I'll ask my uncle how often the "Beethoven" is used in Finals at International competitions. Then, I can just categorize it that way, instead of comparing it to acrobatic concertos.

i think beethoven's violin concerto may be considered the hardest because it's so deep and subjective, i don't know about violin because i don't play it - but as a flute player i find that the harder pieces are the ones with greater emotional depth, not the technically challenging; technical difficulties can be overcome but emotional depth and musical interpretation is either something you have or you don't and that is what makes or breaks a piece.

its not really about representing the composer in their piece, its about interpreting the piece your own way and expressing yourself

Menuhin a été ce merveilleux musicien violoniste chef d'orchestre toute sa vie !Cela ne fait aucun débat n'en dépalaise à certains.
