Most of the time, people associates (for whom who know her in Europe at the present time), the voice of Marian Anderson with the Contralto parts. Here is a radio broadcast where she performs the Casta Diva from Norma. Even lowered a tone, it gives clearly a new idea of her great range, and eclectic possibilities.

The quality of this voice transcends any of the problems of recording technology, the exaggerated expression that seems de rigueur for modern singers. Love this.

I actually tend to think that Marian Anderson's voice is unique in the fact that her lower register is visceral and sounds very much like a contralto's, whereas her middle register sounds more like a mezzo-soprano's and her top register sounds definitely like a dramatic soprano... strange voice... Toscanini was right in describing her voice as "one that is heard but once in a century".

My voice teachers teacher heard Marian Anderson in concert and said that at that time she was billed as a soprano. Because she had such an amazing lower range, she billed herself as a contralto as that was a rarer voice type. I love her voice, her vocal artistic interpretations are so breathtaking.

Beautiful and moving. As good as Ponselle.

I know this is a live broadcast so i don't think this applies but I heard that music had to be performed faster during this period because it needed to be able to fit on a 78 rpm record

jajajaja, eso mismo dije yo en un comentario hace meses y me pusieron un montón de votos negativos. Es totalmente cierto, sin embargo, ella en el registro de soprano sonaba más agradable que muchas sopranos, y era contralto...

I always had heard Anderson as a very low contralto. If well, here she is not a soprando, she got high notes and a very good melody. Good and strange Juan Fernando Sanin E

you are right, but consider the records of the begining of the century, and you'll see every thing was taken faster, even speakers's voice on radio. Vivrato has also changed a lot in violin and singing.

Ya no quedan altos puras como Anderson. Solo muchas sopranos, de las que es raro encontrar alguna que no sea una grulla.

Not bad, but too fast, this aria a pray not a waltz
