One thing you could do is cut the excess fiberglass off with a razor knife. What you do is wait for the glass to start setting up, where it is pretty firm and just a little tacky. The just take your knife and run around it and pull on the cut off as you go. It will cut like butter. Plus it is easier on your hands taking it off the mold.

Silver or mirror spray is only 50% reflective. It will heat good but not worth the effort. There is a true mirror spray that is a 3 step process, it costs $100 for about two dishes.

Just a thought here but wouldnt it be better to spray the surface with a chrome spray paint? First put a nice primer layer on and sand it to get it realy smooth. Im not shure if the reflectivnes would be higher but just a sugestion.

I hope Denise was also wearing a mask when you where cutting the fibre-glass (if it was Denise)?

hey where did you get that shiny stuff?

First of all, thank you for the informative video.
Just imagine the temps you could achieve if you used that mirror tape on an 10 foot BUD (c-band) sat dish. My only concern would be that it is tape and it would be subjected to weathering, peeling off, etc.

Yes, you are correct, this is closer to spherical. The tiny Spot produced by a Fresnel lens is really only used for melting stuff and burning. For cooking and most steam applications, the larger, less defined Spot produces the same energy over a larger area and actually boils water faster as less heat is lost due to in being several hundred degrees over a larger area verses several thousand over 1/2 inch. More surface area. Thank you for your comment:-)

To continue my previous post, perhaps your square paraboloid didn't focus to as small an area as your fresnel lens because of the mold of your water tank was only close to a paraboloid, and not a perfect match. If it was spherical instead of elliptical, wouldn't you get a lower focusing ability?
I'm only guessing, as I'm not good at geometry (I'm not afraid of numbers, it's shapes that confuse me :-)
