thats a completely ambiguous definition of a style,it could be any fighting style then.

Thats because MMA is not so much a style as a way of intergrated training (like JKD )but with an emphasis on Sport/Competition.
What makes MMA soo good is that techniques get tested under real pressure. Take what works and throw away what does'nt.
I trained WT for 5 years but now train MMA to be honest when sparring it's pretty hard to get most of what i learnt In WT to actually work.

that's exactly my point. MMA is so broad that it seems as long as you fight full contact and allow punches, kicks, grappling, and wins by submission, you're free to do what you want and not be criticized. so what if you do jujitsu and throw haymakers? you can still say you do jujitsu. my problem is that people often criticize WT for not being "really WT," but then no one points out that a lot of MMA fighters who claim to fight specific styles aren't really fighting according to their style.

no sir they'll just say they do Jujitsu as if there is only 1 style of jujitsu in the world. To sum ppl MMA is throwing punches, picking someone up and slamming them. Plus punching them on the ground.

the problem with calling it "MMA" is that you get the luxury of not having to be specific. if you really break it down, you've got a plethora of different styles being used. look at MMA fighters that claim they use BJJ, or muay thai, or any other style, then watch them fight. if you're a purist, you can just as well condemn them for "not using BJJ" or whatever style they're "supposed to be." "MMA" is a general term that's on the same line as "kung fu," which describes any number of styles.

I think they are very useful in the clinch.I've recently come back to BJJ after 7 years off and didn't have too much of a problem because of Chi sao in that period.Depends how u practise it.

the real issue is that whenever WT is used in MMA, chi-sau techniques never fucking come into play -- thus it's fair to say that spending time and money in private chi-sau lessons is a waste of time

I agree :)

Then it's not traditionnal wing chun...If you read my post right I said traditionnal martial arts can only be effective if they have evolved for competition purposes

Well for us, Wing Tsun is about aggressive forward pressure, sticking to an opponent and yielding to superior force.Way back in 1986 the leader of our system said that WT could be adapted to any Martial Sport and it has. the same approach is in all the vids if you look. |
