Everyone needs to watch the youtube video of Stephen Sondheim teaching the song he wrote to young musical students. Then you can see the way the composer wanted the song to be sung.

This song must be acted at least as much as, if not more than, it needs to be sung.
Sarah Vaughan and Judy Collins are much better singers and musicians than Judi Dench, yet her version is just as good as either of theirs. And Streisand, much as I don't like her, does it brilliantly because she is a singing actress as good as any.

I never had, either, but perhaps there's more than 1 way to sing a great song. Sometimes this is bittersweet, or melancholy, or bemused, or all of the above. But heartbreak is entirely valid, too--it's about wisdom gained too late, about the price of not knowing yourself, of being a fool. She's middle-aged, she knows she'll never have her true love, and yet her career suddenly seems meaningless, too. This was a revelatory, devastating performance.

I never pictured the song to be sung with such bitterness and heartbreak. It's not a heartbroken ballad, it's a song of looking back at what good thing she let pass by her, and regretting, hating herself, because she knows she's made a terrible mistake. It's not that she's pissed at Fredrik, but she's disappointed with herself. It's more of an ironic laugh than anything.

This song was written to be sung exactly like this. It was written for Glynis Johns who wasn't a singer. Judy does it to perfection.
