Sad stuff about The Balinese. I was just out there several weeks ago with my ex girlfriend and I talked to her about how I think it'd be cool to play there in the future with my band. I found out about how it got destroyed not too long ago, and was sent out to the area for my job last week and got to see it first hand. I was shocked. Murdoch's pier is still somewhat there but all the walls are gone and you can kinda see inside, and the entrances into it are gone... and obviously Hooters is gone.

my husband and i always vacationed on galveston island before finally getting to move here in feb of 2007,we have many fond memories of the balinese, not to mention it just dosen't look right to drive down the seawall and not see it,it's just wrong!!We have pictures thankfully but it won't be the same.

I ate at the Balinese May 23, 1977. My husband and I were on our honeymoon along with our friends who got married at the same time. Three of us voted for the Balinese. The other guy wanted to eat somewhere else. Yeah, right. Like we would eat anywhere else. If it was good enough for ZZ Top, it was good enough for us. I'll always remember that long corridor. Farewell, Balinese!

I wish I had gone there before the hurricane. I always loved this song.

Doubtful. As I understand the whole renewal was a labour of love by a local Attorney. The irony is that it was actually turning a profit during its last couple of years. Sure they could rebuild a structure there, but it would *never* be the same. The arched ceiling and the copper tooled palms and artwork were all vintage materials and utterly irreplaceable. Not to mention all the autographed photos of departed celebrities.

Saw Ezra Charles for the first time at the Balinese. Had MANY a good time there. It was someplace special for sure. Definitely the end of an era. SO sad!!

Walking along the Seawall, when passing the Balinese Room (even when it was closed and abandoned) you felt a bit of the mystique of "old Galveston" -- that legendary time when the "Republic of Galveston" considered itself largely independent from many of the gambling legislative preferences of the rest of Texas. Galveston has much more to worry about after Ike, but the loss of the Balinese Room and the adjacent Murdoch's Pier will leave a void at the site of these familiar landmarks.

Man ... I don't live in Houston now but my heart is still there and in Galvston. :( Sad to think the Balinese is gone!
