I would guess because Obama hasn't officially announced his run yet -- only announced his "exporatory committee" -- is why his site is doesn't include more online community options. I'm sure when he officially announces his 'run' they will roll out the enhancements on his site. (Although good web marketing points you mentioned on web searches, and yet available domain names)
