As a tribute to Kurt Vonnegut, the literary icon who passed away April 11, 2007, NOW proudly shares one of his last broadcast television interviews. On our October 7, 2005 program, NOW Host David Brancaccio interviews Vonnegut about his life and the current state of American democracy. With his classic wit, the legendary author of CAT'S CRADLE and SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE delivers some choice words for our parties, our system, and our president. You are one clever guy. Or is it gal?

I think you take Vonnegut at face value. If you take a different approch while listening to him you may find he is an optomist. After all, why do you think he would be so critical of humanity if not because he saw great potential in it.

i'm not atheist and i completely agree with those statements.

Then you're not analytically looking at society.

You never said he wasn't correct in saying that though.

Hey had only three kids. He adopted three who were his sister's kids after they were orphaned. His sister died of cancer, and his brother-in-law died in a train crash--all in the same week, I believe. He also adopted his 7th child when she was an infant.

it's funny he had 6 kids

i like his books, but yeah, vonnegut is a real sour machine

I've read all his books, and he gave me some laughs, but I wouldn't want my son to read him; he is a misanthrope, a pessimist. His conclusions are insane-"we're awful animals, we are a disease,we should stop reproducing." Sad sad..I thought Athiests were tough guys!

Vonnegut is, has always been, and will always be, a hero, a literary, giant, and the greatest of the "great" generation...
