I think you take Vonnegut at face value. If you take a different approch while listening to him you may find he is an optomist.
After all, why do you think he would be so critical of humanity if not because he saw great potential in it.

Hey had only three kids. He adopted three who were his sister's kids after they were orphaned. His sister died of cancer, and his brother-in-law died in a train crash--all in the same week, I believe. He also adopted his 7th child when she was an infant.

I've read all his books, and he gave me some laughs, but I wouldn't want my son to read him; he is a misanthrope, a pessimist. His conclusions are insane-"we're awful animals, we are a disease,we should stop reproducing."
Sad sad..I thought Athiests were tough guys!
