Ge Jin, aka Jingle - Chinese Gold Farmers in MMORPGs

Ge Jin, PhD candidate in Communication at UCSD, is researching areas of the computer gaming culture in China, real money trade in online games and documentary filmmaking. In China, a new kind of factory hires people to play online games like World of Warcraft and Lineage and produce in-game currency, equipment, high-level characters and other virtual goods. Affluent gamers from Korea, Europe and America pay real money for these virtual goods to quickly raise their status in games. Jin's research takes a close look at how these factories, commonly known as "gold farms", organize the production and distribution of virtual goods.

I know his point, I am just saying his presentation was funny because his points were all over the place and he apparently is supposed to have a lot of schooling in communication.

"that sucked that guy sucks herman li had to make 100,000 gold to buy his guitar" I agree.

Just a couple points. 1.) Gold farmers themselves do not use bots, there would be no point and it would be redundant. The company owners do it. 2.) Without company owners, there wouldn't be farmers. What is your beef with the people looking for jobs in an overpopulated country? Blame the owners of the companies. 3.) You yourselves, whether by actually buying gold or not are supporting the gold farming industry. You are keeping the game in business, which means that people will keep buying gold.

I'm sorry but you have a poor understanding of the term "fair" i'm afraid.

u miss the point entirely

It is funny how his points are so poorly tied together. He would have failed communications class.

Chinese Gold farmers need to get over themselves. They are not professional gamers... as far as I am considered they are criminals.
JKSmellie (June 18, 2008 at 2:44 pm)
While that may be true, a professional gamer does not go off and deliberately break the rules of an online game for their own personal gain or in this case, the gain of others. Do you class it professional to gain an unfair advantage? Not all gold farmers get the gold by scratch, they use 3rd party programs as well. They is not professional at all.

Profession: something you do for a living. They game so they can pay the rent, food etc. So they are gamers by profession or professional gamers.

food to eat, a place to sleep, clean water to drink, heated and cooled room (i saw a damn air conditioner) and they get paid what is considered massive wages in china, plus theres no Manuel labor. these people, but Chinese standards are pulling in 6 figures. personally, i wouldn't want challenge a game company that pulls in almost 200 million a month on membership fees. these people will be caught which is an oh well situation. im all too familiar with the issue, i use to play runescape =P
