As a case with almost all Civil War songs, there is a "red" and a "white" version (and, quite often, a "pre-civil war" version).
For example, red "Over the valleys, over the mountains" is based upon "Drozdov's soldiers' march" which, in turn, is based upon "March of the Siberian sharpshooters".

What breed horses were used by the Cossacks? Is there a Russian warmblood type cavalry horse comparable to western European breeds? Akhal Tekes seem a little light boned for those purposes. Anybody out there know anything? A friend of mine bought a breed to a horse named Groms that did exhibition jumping in the Moscow Circus, but he died before she could get her mare to him. It was such a shame. He was a gorgeous big black thing. Just stunning. I wonder if he was typical Russian breeding.

I agree - his Russian is excellent for one whose native tongue is Flemish. It's not like a native Russian, but at least he doesn't murder the song like some performers tend to do. Although I wish they would have kept the original "красной армии" instead of "русскай армии"...

Season 1, ep. 5, IIRC. I briefly recall the end of the episode when Hawke played the melody on the chello...

It's interesting that the Finnish translation of this song is about Czar's Cossacks. I had never heard until now that this was actually a Soviet song.
