Me too. They're definitely the top three tenor players.
Trane was definitely the most influential...I mean, come on, he is Trane.
Stan is my personal favorite - I enjoy his tone, phrasing, etc...but, he is almost entirely unemulatable. If you know what I mean.
However, I believe the all around best jazz tenor saxophonist of all time was Dex.

If you wanna get his album, get "Dextor Gordon, Homecoming, Live at the Village Vanguard." 2 disc album.

So incredible, yet they play with such ease. Incredible!

....it's the space between the notes that makes the music......

He plays too much Chorusses, but what he plays is amazing ;-)

For me, it has always been Dex,Trane, and Getz (in no particular order). Where was this concert? Is it out on DVD?

If you want to learn bop, Dexter is the man. However, I can't say that I enjoy his sound on soprano.

I cried when this man died. I took up the axe after hearing Bird, somewhere back in '86. It was the big Dex who shaped me and taught me everything an axeman needs to know.
The movie came out in '87 and I've seen it almost every year . . .

I don't agree with you on the empty spaces thing. I think he has them, and that they are necessary in music. |
