a person giving such comments ( he was austrian) shows that he has no idea of history..He was a subject of the prince-bishop of Salzburg as his ancestors were citizens of Augsburg, free and democratical city surrounded by bavaria at that time. Was Kopernikus polack only because he was born in a place which now belongs to Poland? was the french composer LULLY(=Luglio!) italian, only because he was born on the peninsula although always and ever feeling french?

ONE pronunciation for Latin??
"Vulgar" (popular), Classical and Ecclesiastical versions all differed to varying degrees from one another.
By Mozart's time, there were at least two accepted pronunciations: German and Italianate. It is naïve to suggest that this is due to lack of education. Italian was widely spoken in the court of Emp Joseph II, though its prominence decreased during his rule.
Further study would be req'd before we can say which version Mozart preferred.

Nobody knows the correct pronunciation of latin!

Very nice. But, about their pronunciation, it is wrong. Latin does not have "italian pronunciation" or "german pronunciation". It has latin pronunciation. Period. And this is not it.
But unfortunenately nowadays it is hard to find interpretations with the correct text pronunciation.
Nevertheless, very nice rendition. Lovely.

You are actually correct about German and Italian pronounciation of latin. Back in the day, people would sing latin with their native accents becuase they didn't know any better.

Oh, well perhaps I'm mistaken then. I only know that at my university I am sometimes asked to sing with an Italian pronunciation of Latin, and sometimes with a Germanic pronunciation. But that's my only experience with it. And thanks for calling me out on Mozart's nationality-- a stupid slip up on my part! |
