My great grandfather got shot in the liver there ='(
He lived though, and got sent home with a purple heart. He died on December 26, 2006 of lung cancer, never smoked a day in his life.

Ah, whatever. Why are we arguing? Who cares? One of us has to be wrong or both. We aren't even changing each other's opinions.
Karelwolfpup (August 29, 2008 at 11:40 pm)
fair enough, it didn't help that there were two commanders for the defence of France with differing opinions, but nevertheless the main force at the Germans disposal for repulsing the Normandy landings were not near the beaches. Indeed, part of the Overlord plan was to ensure that those units were delayed as much as possible.

yes, DT sherman tanks as I said. And no, the canadians wouldn't have had the same problem, look up the "funnies" and you'll see why. The Allies knew that the troops on the "Atlantic Wall" were second and third tier troops from intelligence intercepts. This is why they expected "old men and boys". The 321st was a great surprise as it was an experienced unit, the vast majority of the "best fighting units" were either in the pas de Calais, or closer to Paris than the beaches. ON HITLERS ORDERS.
jrpeters5 (August 29, 2008 at 11:21 pm)
You are miss informed. The Americans I believe employed around 20 Sherman boat type tanks but only 2 made it to the beach because of strong currents. So even if the Canadians had assaulted there they would have had the same problem. The Americans wouldn't expect to be fighting old men and young boys. You must be crazy, this is the Atlantic Wall we are talking about here. Hitler diverted so many resources to build this fortress. He put some of his best fighting units to defend the beaches.
Karelwolfpup (August 29, 2008 at 9:54 pm)
sorry mate, but Canada would have had a slightly easier time because they would have had the "Funnies", the large variety of tanks specially built for that assault. The American commanders did have DT sherman tanks, but let them out too far and most were swamped by the sea. Apart from that, there was no other armoured support for the Americans at Omaha. Plus, you didn't expect to encounter the 321st infantry division(I think that's the right unit), you expected "old men and young boys".
