The standby just allows your amplifier to utilize partial power (standby) to warm up the filament in your tubes so you don't wear them out as quickly; turn it on when they're somewhat warm (after about a minute).

I must say it's an expensive hobby:-) Better get a good evening job then! ;-) It's worth every euro though. There's nothing more frustrating than playing with a crappy sound, while you know it....
