The words were "when you become a great pirate" which changes a lot of things. He basically asked Luffy to surpass him. Which won't be for another ten years at the rate that Oda writes his story at. As for what they would call him, a pirate doesn't loose his nickname.

We're told he was on par with Mihawk, thats about all. And his battles with Mihawk echoed through the Grand Line. Maybe someday, Oda will let us see those battles. Maybe. I keep saying this, but we got confirmation from Oda in an interview Shanks never lost any strength with that arm. Considering his status though, its hard to imagine him loosing a limb against that seaking "Lord of the Coast" (that was for those who don't know the Eel creature's name).

There is a wikia out there that tells you all you need to know about Shanks... And then some. Oh wells, theres my advertisment for the wikia. Lol. Shanks is a great pirate with a lot of storyline behind him. You have to read the wikia or the manga to find out what goes on with him.
