Heifetz: Saint-Saens - Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso

Heifetz in his prime, playing Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. From the 1939 movie, "They Shall Have Music". Possibly the best bit of fiddle playing from him I have ever seen. The slow sections reflect his wondrous capability for expression. I know this has been uploaded, but this is of much better quality, and it's in English ;)

Technically perfect does not mean the best, for example, I really very much like Misha Elman's sloppy performance of Tchaikovski's #1 fro Violin, but technical perfection does account for a lot!! like 90% of it. If there is just a little sloppiness, and it is quite creative and unusual, it is only forgivable.

this is nice!! very different interpretation! but i loved it completely! talking about the different interpretations, i came across an interesting interpretation of bach double violin concerto by two young guys. the video name is FUSED Bach Doucle live. check it out!

You can argue about his interpretation, but not about his supreme technical prowess.

First of all, this piece IS a show-off piece. Saint-Saens wrote it for Pablo de Sarasate, who had comissioned a violin concerto. Sarasate, as we know, loved to showcase his technical skills. So I think the fact that Heifetz DOESN'T show off is an incredible testament to his musical restraint and his respect for the composer. But I also prefer Perlman's recording. Though Sarah Chang plays a wonderfully melancholic Introduction, neither she nor Heifetz capture the charm of the Rondo Capriccioso.

You guys realize you're basing your judgement over Heifetz's playing based on a piece he played in a movie, adjusted to fit within alotted time? Base judgement calls on actual, unedited works, not something from a scene in a film.
streetking419 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
yea right this might not be the best inerpretation but its better the sarah changs but perlman plays it better than both of them. i dont know what planet you are from but articulation always matters. and there is a lot of soul in the way heifetz plays, and i know you didnt say sarha chang is a better violinist then heifetz but im glad you didn't because heifetz is a way better violinist than sarah chang musicly and in technicallay

This is just plain amazing. I think his interpretation is amazing as well.

Of course we can not like recordings irational , only taking into consideration the name written on top. However , it doesn't occur to me in any way that Heifetz transformed this piece in a "show-off". Actually , I am sure that he vary much disliked any idea of "show-of" in anything he played. If you would listen closely to many of his recordings you would finally agree.
