If "free trade" ever threatens corporate America, the "conservatives" will provide plenty of government welfare, like when Reagan dished out gobs of tax money to GM in the 80s. etc etc etc. Of course, whenever poor countries try to protect their local economy, they are violating "free market principles" and the IMF and World Bank will punish them accordingly. Pretty good system...if you are one of the world's elites.

I never said we SHOULD eliminate all subsidies and trade barriers. My point is that "free trade" is a bunch of BS designed to line the pockets of the rich. The "free market" never applies to US corporations with connections. Corporatized US farming's free pass out of NAFTA's "free markets" is one example. Another example: Wal-Mart, the poster child of neoliberalism, with products made in cheap unregulated China. Guess what? Wal-Mart is a WELFARE QUEEN that gets literally billions in US taxpayer

Right it isn't completely free trade and most neoliberal economist agree with that position.Perhaps we eliminated all farming subsidies and trade barriers what then. Would Mexican farmers be safe. No of course they wouldn't because there are many nations besides Mexico who would love to get into the USA market. So they may succeed but the risk still remains that they will go out of business because say Zimbabwe tries to cut into that market share.

Get rid of all the illegal aliens. Jobs have been exported and foreigners imported. Nafta is bad for many reasons, even more than how it has affected jobs. SAVE America - get back to living wages for American citizens.

This video doesn't even begin to address the reasons NAFTA-style "free trade" sucks. NAFTA completely destroyed Mexico's farming industry. Mexican farmers can't compete with SUBSIDIZED industrial US farms. Mexican real wages under NAFTA plummeted and unemployment skyrocketed, increasing illegal immigration to the US. Why don't you look at what Metalclad did to the Mexican people under NAFTA and tell me it's great? Thanks, though, for portraying everyone who opposes NAFTA as a xenophobe. |
