It's an alternative to Microsoft Windows or Mac OSX, ie it is an operating system category (what you experience when your computer starts and and is running - not the actual programs running on it, but the "desktop" and associated components).
There are many versions of Linux, like there are many versions of Windows.
Some people consider Linux to be more suitable for more techno-savvy users. Nowadays, Linux is more friendlier to novice users than it has been in the past ...and it's free!
