The Christmas Song - Mel Tormé and Judy Garland

Few people know that Mel co-wrote this famous song with Bob Wells in 1944 - when Mel was 19 years old. "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..." The duet is wonderful... but can you count the number of words Judy gets wrong during the song? Gotta love the (mostly) a capella ending... Available on the 1963 DVD "Judy Garland Show, Episode 15: The Christmas Show." Please... Subscribe to BestArts Add our videos to your "Favorites" Try our extensive set of playlists

In Judy's mind: where the hell is that lyric sheet?

she said "rainbow" on purpose.

Mel talked about the background of this 1963 Christmas show in his 1970 book, "The Other Side Of the Rainbow". It was one of the few times Judy was happy taping her weekly series- she had her kids with her on this show- but there was plenty of turmoil outside her CBS Television City studio. Her relationship with the network, and its president, James "Smiling Cobra" Aubrey, was deteriorating, as was her marriage...this was a VERY difficult time for Judy, but she never showed it on screen.

If you can't listen to cheesy egomaniacs that doesn't leave many singers for you!

Nice video. This Christmas is going to be particularly difficult because my mother just died a few months ago and she loved Christmas. My Dad is gone, too and loved all the old timers...I can remember watching all those musical Christmas shows on TV. We had a real Christmas tree in the living room, but we had a silver tree in the family room where the TV was located. Such good memories. Will be very sad this year.

You keep talking about what a jerk Torme was. I've heard a lot of stories about what a difficult pain Garland could be. In the end, all that matters is the music. And I'll take Mel's smooth, easy style any day, over Garland's musical nervous breakdown.

thanks for the acknowledgement - of course not everyone agrees I could never listen to anyone singing while I knew what a cheesy ego-maniac they are no matter how competent they are vocally
