Well said.
I guess I didn't take that into account. I guess it's because I never really considered black people to be ugly myself.

this goes for anyone thats ever been made to fell like you don't belong or have been judge by the color of your skin then you would understand the message in this song is one of self love and most important black love. its never gonna be the right time to tell ourselves that we are beautifull with out a hand full of people having a probloem with it......the truth is she should have just said what i think she meant "black skin" y cant that be said without the need to apologize for it. i love it

After centuries of darker skinned people being told they are uglier than paler skinned people (centuries! Do NOT forget history!) we colored people *need* to heal our psychic wounds with songs like this. Yet if we want to heal our country's racial wounds, ALL people, white black brown etc. MUST love their own skin. You *should* feel proud of your white skin, not in some racist/superior way, but just because that's who you are, and you should love yourself no matter what.

If you read a lot, you'll notice that MANY of the "great" poets/authors (Shakespeare, Joyce, Faulkner, etc.) will praise the female characters for their "skin like ivory," "pale and beautiful." Think about Disney's description of Snow White, quoted from the movie: "She had skin as white as snow." For centuries, darker-skinned people were those who had to work in the sun -- a.k.a., the lower classes. Therefore, darker skin was considered less desirable than paler skin - a class issue.

Nyrmahl: Europeans DO write about skin color. Ummm ever read Shakespeare or Lord Byron? They go on and on and on about lily white alabaster porcelain skin. This is not a race thing. She is talking about a man she is in love with and loves EVERYING about...and that happens to be a Black man.
So is Shakespeare considered racist? Lord Byron? Percy Shelley? Please think before you speak.
