The Blood of common men is merely the price, to establish ideas and agendas of the privileged. It always has and always will be until uncommon men stand up. "Give me liberty or give me death".

The message the ruunner had was that the troops should'nt attack because the English army did'nt need a diversion to get on Gallipoli

I haven't seen this movie, the young man with the dark hair who was running towards the front line but didn't make it before the whistle - what was his message?

I saw this movie on HBO when I was twelve in 1982...couldn't believe the tragedy. I was totally shocked and deeply disturbed by what I'd seen. Had a huge impact on my life though. I've been teaching American and World History for the last 15 years, and I always show the last 30 minutes of this movie during my WWI unit. What a waste of superhuman valor. But what valor it was indeed. I am in awe of those brave men and indeed all who put themselves in harms way for duty and love of country.

Such a sad thing. Boris Pasternak said it best:-
