I like his legato!

I saw Mischa Maisky yesterday in Berwaldhallen, Stockholm Sweden. When the concert was formally over he returned up on stage once more and said (roughly) before playing this wonderful suite. "No good concert is complete before this piece has been played". It couldn't have ended better.

This man kicking as all.

Holy shit you morbid fuck! "Soldier Boy" is not music, it's some ungrateful, black asshole talking to noise. For your own sake, listen to this again with good intent.

The argument that the musician should only play a piece of music "as written" is a dangerous one, especially with Bach, who left few if any marks regarding dynamics, articuation, and phrasing. The performer must have the freedom to make their own interpretation based on study of the historical, philosophical, and musical ideas and tastes of the time. There is no such thing as playing a piece "as written." The music lives through interpretation.

A very good comment. Thank you for sharing with others.

Of course I never said anything about should or shouldn't, qualifying my statement as "my sense". It is Bach's music however and no argument can be made there. Interpretation will always be irrelevant given enough time, but the music will be unchanged, therefore, it is more enduring for it to be played as written.
