He was big with music enthusiasts and people who actually danced. Many of my friends listened and still listen to him. He would have been bigger but I seem to remember boy bands and bubble gum pop music coming out and just inundating everything

I believe he is big in the UK, Don't understand why he didn't become huge in the US. I remember one of his vid's in the 90's on mtv, I think he's great.

Hi IncaRoad01, I know for a fact that The Blackbyrds, Roy Ayers Ubiquity, Lonnie Liston Smith, Rufus & Chaka, Ohio Players, E.W&F...
in other words 70's R&B/Jazz Fusion played a big part of Jamiroquai's sound because I got to hang out with them in the early 90's and they told me. I've done some recent work with Zender and have gotten to know know him pretty good and he told me basically if they were kickass on bass, he was influenced by them..Bernard Edwards, Bootsy, Larry Graham, etc.

I hear a definite link to what Jamiroquai do and stuff by the Mizell Brothers from the 70s.
If you check out Donald Byrd's Places & Spaces (mostly written by the Mizells) listen to some of the basswork by Chuck Rainey. I would almost bet money on Zender listing this stuff as an influence, moreso than Bootsy.

I'm a distant relative of the drumer Derrick Mckenzie, met him in 1980 when he was an unemployed "yout" in London. I was well young but thing I do remember is that he always played the drums. 15 year later and he's part of one of the biggest, classliest band of the 90's the mix of rare groove, acid jazz with retro soul outlasted all their contemporaries of the time including the Brand New Heavies. |
