Speed Racer came out a few months before Dark Knight.
People just thought it wasn't going to bad because the show was kind of stupid

this is the best movie ever!!! =D i have it on dvd, it came out sept. 16. and speed is hot, i have to say. well emile hirsch, but i think he looks even better as speed racer, with the shorter black hair. he looked so cute when he first got into the mach 5 in the video. :] by the way: *steals the mach 5*

Probably why it flopped. Also, this movie tried to appeal to today's kids instead of the ones who grew up in the late 60s and 70s. Doesn't work.
At least it wasn't as bad as that American-produced SR cartoon from the early 90s. Absolutely awful!!!
