Badfinger, just the best

It was a co write between Tom Evans and Pete Ham, which makes it sadder still: Tom wrote the "Can't Live" chorus, Pete the rest. troubled souls both.

In fairness to Nilsson, Pete Ham hanged himself some four years after Nilsson released his version and in his suicide note made references to his dislike of Stan Polley, Badfingers US manager...as such nothing for Harry to me ashamed of.

Sorry to be so dumb but I found this via Harry Nilsson here on You Tube. Can you tell me just how this song led to two suicides? I don't know anything about Badfinger, in fact I'd never heard of them before.

Were you serious about Mariah Carry. Her version was pathetic compared to this or Nillsons version.

As much as I can dig this version, which is well decent onto itself...full respect to the writer/performer element of Pete Ham.
However Nilsson and/or his producer (never can tell who did what!) takes it to new heights. The orchestration added and vocal depth in Nilsson's recording is well beyond subjective...its just better. No worries, I'm sure Ham thoroughly enjoyed his writer's check for it.
Cheers

It's painfully ironic that this song which is by far badfingers best piece of work and one of the most covered tracks in history led to the suicide of two of their main and original members. Sad really,Harry Nilsson and their record company should be ashamed of themselves.

Yes its the original, but Mariah's rendition in the 1990s just makes their singing sound flat, even though they put more soul into the song and into the instrumentation.
