Explaining the Amish Way of Life - VOA Story

Not far from the hustle and bustle of city life live the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. These deeply religious people shun the conveniences of modern society to live a simpler life where transportation is a horse and buggy and horsepower really means horsepower. The Amish are very devout and take seriously the biblical commands to separate themselves from the things of the world including electricity. Power comes from propane, kerosene, wood, coal, or natural gas. As the world around the peaceful farmland changes, so have some of the traditions of the Amish. Transportation is no longer limited to horse-drawn buggies. "There is a division among the Amish over the automobile. One group got automobiles, another group kept the horse and buggy. we just simply name them old order -- drive the horse and buggy, and the new order -- drive the automobiles. They have electric, they have meeting houses and they don't have green shades." But many traditions remain. Amish children attend one-room schoolhouses through grade eight and farming is the mainstay of Amish life. There are normally two horses on a farm for buggies. Several mules are kept for farming. Milking is one of the most important sources of income on the farm. Many Amish leaders believe their separation from the outside world strengthens their community. And that community is thriving. Despite what many on the outside would describe as a backwards lifestyle, the Amish population in Lancaster County has almost tripled over the past half century.

When things go bad in the U.S., and we lose power and money and the ways of how we live. The Amish are the ones we will look up to help us get back on are feet.

The Amish remind me of a favorite TV series that ran when I was young, "Little House on the Prairie". I have great respect for them - they are wonderful people and hard workers.

actually there is a chance for an amish person to watch this video they can become an outsider. I used to work with an amish crew and one of the guys told me that he had once left the amish way of life. But he returned to the amish ways. so thats one way I think an amish person could go about the internet. the amish are not totally in the dark. lol

It feels strange knowing that they won´t have the chance to watch these videos abot their own religion:-)

The truth is hard to take isn't it Reverend? Why is it that you manage to find sinners every time you stop your RV but are unable to see the sinner in the mirror? Ask God to remove your predjudice and guilt and he will. I promise you that you won't find God's grace by finding fault with others. God be with you Reverend. David Kauffmann

Not one of us is perfect sir, not you or the Amish. Your ridicule and disdain of an old Amish woman is justified then because of the actions of others in another community? What kind of man ridicules an old woman?

John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. read it... I have seen the result of Amish shunning people and the way they have trashed some people... have spoke with people in holmes co,, who have been hurt deeply and God is healing them from the damage the amish cult has done to them
amishkinship (October 4, 2008 at 1:46 am)
Jesus commands Christians to judge others? Is that really the truth sir? Jesus did not judge anyone by their outward appearance and you should not either. It is up to all of us to be stewards of God's love and grace rather then to point out anothers "faults". I would advise you sir to re-read the 9th Commandment: "Thy shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor". And you Reverend are doing just that.
amishkinship (October 4, 2008 at 1:36 am)
The clothes they wear are normal sir. They only seem un-normal to you because of your own discolored view of them. The Amish do not have Bishops in their religion. I strongly advise you to learn more about the Amish people before shunning them. You are doing a great dis-service to the Amish and Christians alike.
