G'day! Fantastic song for Aussies...
This song is about a spirit of Freedom and never giving in to oppressive regimes. A "matilda" was the name given to a swagman's kit (his swag or bedroll, billy and tucker bag) and "waltzing" was the slang name for walking around the country looking for work. A swagman was independent and it is our love of independence and support for others that characterises Aussies.
