He had so much energy!!!

Don't know if anybody mentioned yet ..but at 2:46 he switches to traditional grip but on his rigth hand ....being rigth handed according to his drum set distribution.......strange

After 15 years of playing the instrument i just can't agree that firepower is what gives a drummer great feel, especially not in jazz. As this footage demonstrates, Cobham's style of chops was far more suited to later jazz rock than small band. That's nothing to do with the power of his strokes, just the style of his playing.
And there are plenty of leading players who don't possess the Cobham 'firepower' who ooze feel, Harvey Mason being my prime example. But, yes, Cobham is a total killer.

Think of firepower as an expressive musical tool. FIREPOWER IS WHAT MAKES TRAPSET DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHERS! Drummers who have firepower (usually) have FANTASTIC FEEL. ITS ALMOST NEVER THE OTHER WAY AROUND! Never forget that! Both drummers we could intelligently say had great feel. Maybe Tony's approach appealed to a wider drumming fan base which might be accurate. Tony didnt have the explosive force Billy had. Billy consumates both subtle and 50cal power when musically called for. I love him. |
