I think that if people weren't prepared to stand up for what was right and wrong, we wouldn't have accomplished as much as we did. We still have a long way to go, maybe my children's generation will get inspired to take action on fundamental issues that require corrective action. I love the song Ohio by CSNY, but it makes me incredibly sad to think that lives had to be lost to instruct change

you don't have to have children to know "family values" is a joke. it's a joke, because it's right wing code for "fundamentalist, heterosexual, anti-abortion, anti-welfare (socialism to help the poor, huh?), don't dissent, etc.
also, don't you think "family values" is a tad subjective?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

I was 9 when this happened, and just vaguely remember the event. I remember thinking that hippies were cool, and was sad when I heard that they were the victims. Hippies, activists, they were rebels to me even at that age.

This happened in 1970.

you are 49 and you actually remember the 60's?
Yeah right.
How old were you in say 1966

Interesting posts. Hippies weren't the only thing that existed in the 60's. Barbarians like Gov. Rhodes also existed - which explains why protesters came into being. Nothing in this world is just all black or all white. Before you condemn hippies for all that is wrong in our society please give some thought to how many things are better today because people were willing to protest and create change.

Is 16, so at this time it may be a good thing I don't have a kid.
However, I don't think that the world is a better place just because we have tricked our children into thinking that the world is a place of happy sunshine and god will make everything all right.
