He didn't take loads of drugs, he didn't drink himself stupid, he didn't coke himself to stupidity, he didn't totally adhere to all the stereotypes in the "scene" and didn't shag every z-list groupy who came forth.
And yet he got a tonne of stick for being who he is.
He's a good singer, and whether you like it or not, a talented and honest man.
