Masaoka was one of the giants of early Japanese animation, and this is probably his greatest work. Setting aside the racist portrayal (which was a direct Western import that had no profound meaning in Japan), one remarkable aspect of this film that set it apart from other animation of the same period is that there isn't even a hint of war propaganda. Japanese old anime had a great deal of atmosphere.beautidul song,a look,a sense of season etc. I'm glad that nowadays japanese anime is popular whole world, though these anime lack of something.

Creepy as hell!... I like it, though. The spider has a very nice singing voice.

This producer does not have the intention of the racial discrimination.
However, as for these cartoon, it was not got the recommendation of the Education Ministry because the then Japanese Government thought about the same thing.

Maybe the fact that it was made around that time? Even movies right now in the states reflect themes about the war we're having in Iraq. It's just the way these things go. . .
I wonder how many children watched this that died in the bombings in 1945. |
