it takes a while for even your muscles to become accustomed to these new positions your fingers are doing, that's half the battle, just practice, practice, practice.... it's the only "cure" to any guitar problems, practice

buy some new strings. I got a free guitar too, the strings were all black, but I played it for a while. When I got new strings it was a huge difference! They hadn't been changed in 3 years......

I'm having problems. I can't press down the whole bar; my index finger is a bit squishy near the base of it, and refuses to completely hold down my G string.
