I was born in the 70s but luckily Pete Seeger was still on PBS doing his banjo shows.

The only thing he leaves out is what tuning his banjo is in and there are several of them. I have his book, 'How to Play the 5-String Banjo', that he wrote in 1964. The book starts in C tuning, 5th-1st: G C D B D I think? I'll have to double check. Then he talks about D tuning and A tuning, but then there's a footnote that he thinks he should've started off in G tuning, 5th string to 1st string: G D G B D. That is the one predominantly used in most bluegrass music. G is the people's key.

My mom said I needed a green thumb in order to garden. Now Pete is telling me I need an educated thumb. I am in big trouble. All dumb jokes aside, I love Mr. Seeger. He is inspirational.

Time tends to blur after it accumulates in decades but I tell you, brownlee, it's heartbreaking and beautiful how well-meaning and marvelous this old soul was (is) when he unfolds chords and argpeggios to the uninitiated and naive, apparently sometime in the 60s, but who knows when? who cares where? someone coigned "the educucated thumb," a touching phrase that'll outlast the latest quips of the current crop of politicios, to whatever camp they adhere, Baramaists or mcwhatetervists....
