I went to a school very similar to the one in this film during the 1960's. It could actually be based on it. It was in North London and most of the teachers were awful with a few exceptions.

In the book it was much worse. The violence was toned down for the film.
I went to school in England from 1987-1992. The teachers were mostly nasty as hell. Everything was punitive; you could always expect a detention for not doing your homework, but they never rewarded you if you did it well.

A sad commentary on many/most of todays American films is dealing with extreme violence,greed,corruption, and ignorant themes in general. Americans are definitely jaded towards films of this genre and era..sad but true.
