Richard Dawkins on the strangeness of science: TEDTalks

Gokart Video Site
Gokart Video Site Gokart Video Site

http://www.ted.com Mind-expanding talk that probes the limits of human understanding: Why can't we see atoms? Why can't we hear color? How can we understand randomness? Dawkins suggests that the true nature of the universe eludes us because the human mind has evolved mainly to understand other humans -- and to look for human motives even in natural processes. Thus, we create a humanlike God to explain phenomena we can't otherwise comprehend; right or wrong, we're simply wired for it. Dawkins is Oxford's Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, and the author of the landmark 1976 book The Selfish Gene and the 2006 bestseller The God Delusion. (Recorded July 2005 in Oxford, UK)

Skmenon23: So you're saying that you hope his fear of death overwhelms his rational thought process and engulfs him? Some have had this happen, yes, or something similar. But I ask you, why do believers become Atheists? Maybe they just stopped pretending? I for one hate lies, and to lie to myself is beyond comprehension.

Vilxan: It is true. I dare say he is a modern legend. He brings "new" ideas, and implores us to toss out the medieval shackles of religion. Mind you I'm not one of his followers (yet). Heck, I don't even have his books. He fights on the behalf of Science and Atheists, why wouldn't he have groupies? He's the intelligent, rational man's rockstar.

All religions claim to see miricules, shurly they cant all be right? Believing is imagining.

Well what I like about Dawkins is that he is always willing to admit the limits of his, and all knowledge. For example when asked in an interview with Bill Maher if there was a chance that god does exist, he admitted that while he is fairly sure he does not, he is not certain, nor can he be. So yes, it's possible, though unlikely.

Wherever Dawkins goes, there seems to be a band of atheists that follow him. I'm not trying to be funny because it's true!

Dawkins is articulate. But I wonder.. If all beliefs r all reduce-able to a few chemicals passing through the neural synapses, and all memory or the mind is a sum of certain stored proteins in the amygladys and hippocampus in the brain, then isn't atheism also thoughts and therefore chemicals that can be changed somehow, say by an electric shock;then what is the guarantee that Dawkins will not deny all this atheism one day and becomes a believer, like many other darwinians have done in the past?

Dawkins is superb, yet again. He is articulate, understandable, intelligent, and what he says is so true.
