Hi alanlescouse1967. British Steel was already losing its edge by the 1970's but the government of the day kept unprofitable plants open for political rather than business reasons (to avoid job losses). Keeping people in employment was more important to the 1970s governments than keeping the company competitive. With the industrialisation of the developing countries, running British Steel without closing unprofitable plants would have required ever increasing amounts of state subsidies.

Primus / Les Claypool has a version of this song... Damn this band is so ahead of their time in everything they do. I looked up the album on Wikipedia because I was going to say that it looks like it could even be from 1993 and didn't want to find out that it was, damn it's from like 1979
