You're absolutely correct. Once the pilot break the sound barrier, he's travelling at least at 340 m/s or more of course. Well, if you're travelling faster than something, this "something" shall never get into contact with you while you're travelling faster. If you break the sound barrier, you'll be travelling faster than sound, therefore you won't hear a thing, once sound won't "get into contact with you".

not really i've heard casses where after pilots break the sound barrior theres this dead silence because they can no longer hear the jet engings behind them.

the facts: the first human being that was able to produce a sonic boom was "guile". they actually made a videogame out of it called "street fighter". guile is now retired and lives happily with his wife ronda in st.louis.
