毎年3月の14・15日に近 土・日曜に、日牟禮八幡宮（ひむれはちまんぐう）で行われる火祭です。 もともと左義長は中国漢時代の正月行事として行われ、爆竹によって厄除けしたといわれています。わが国では承久元年（1219）より鎮護国家、五穀豊穣を祈る祭りとして行われるようになりました。近江八幡では、豊臣秀次が八幡城を築いて城下町を開いたのと同時に、氏神八幡宮の祭礼として定着したといわれます。
左義長は、藁（わら）を1束ごとに揃えた約3mの三角錐の山車が胴体で、その上に数mの青竹に赤紙を中心としていろいろな飾りが付けられます。頭の上には火のぼりという御弊を付けます。左義長の中心には、毎年の干支にちなんだ造り物を付けてあります。このように左義長は、費用を惜しまず、手間ひまかけて丁寧に作られます。土曜の午後、藁や杉などで作った高さ6mの左義長10数基が神社を出発します。揃いの踊り半纏を着て化粧した若者が、拍子木を持って赤い下駄を履いて「チョウヤレ」の掛け声も勇ましく、町内を御渡りします。翌日の日曜は、朝から各町内を練り歩き、午後には「けんか」と呼ばれる左義長同士のぶつかり合いが繰り広げられます。午後8時頃から境内で順次奉火され、2日間にわたる祭のクライマックスを迎えます。国選択の無形民俗文化財です。
