カマキリは前幼虫と呼 れる状態で卵鞘を突き破って出て来る（出始めの例を矢印で示す）。黒く大きな複眼が目立つ。脱出し易いように流線型の体形で頭部が尖っている。全身が薄い皮に包まれていて脚がまだ使えない。芋虫のように卵鞘を這い下り、細い糸で尾端を固定してぶら下がり直ちに脱皮を始める。（#3へつづく）

夜いつものように飼育 ースから出して卓上で遊ばせていたら、目を離した隙に電気スタンドの裏側で逆立ちして卵を産み始めた。上半身は静止したまま尾部だけを繊細に動かして器用に泡立て、中の空洞に黄色い卵を産みつける。腹の先にある2本の突起（尾角）で触角のように探りながら卵鞘を作っていく。固まった卵鞘の傍から離れるまでの一部始終が4時間12分。デジカメによる総撮影時間48分の動画を編集し、10倍速再生にてお届けします。
